Item #3: I had the opportunity to go to the Yreka Library yesterday.
They have a small genealogy collection--mostly local stuff. I picked up
a book called "FEDERAL LAND SERIES VOL 1 1788-1810" and lo and behold,
there was Pvt. Jesse Gardner. The pertinent information was scattered a
line here, a paragraph there, throughout the book so I did not try to
photocopy it, but here's the story:
As early as 1778 the Continental Congress promised land to soldiers who
would fight on their side. In 1788 they finally passed a bill granting
land warrants to men who could prove a certain amount of military
service and Jesse Gardner received warrant #7164 for 100 acres on 2 Aug
1790.
Congress didn't get around to actually giving away any land until
1800. They set aside a portion of Ohio for the veterans and divided the
property into tracts, sections and then quarter-sections. Each quarter
section of 4000 acres was to be granted as a block. They depended on
agents to gather together enough land warrants to total 4000 acres.
These agents were then to patent title to the land and subdivide it into
appropriate acreage and give title to each individual accordingly. In
fact very little land was processed in this way.
Many, perhaps most of the men granted military land warrants never saw
title to the actual land. Seventeen years had passed since the end of
the war. The men were middle age or older, and few wanted to start over
clearing raw land in the wilds of Ohio. Wealthy entrepreneurs bought up
large numbers of military land warrants and used them to claim portions
of the military tracts which they then divided and sold to anyone who
came along.
In her pension application, Martha Gardner stated that she could not
remember who had purchased her husband's land warrant. According to the
records, it wound up in the possession of a man named Jonathan Dayton.
I suppose the transaction was actually negotiated by an agent of his
since he amassed the most land warrants of anybody.
Title to land using Jesse Gardner's warrant was granted 10 Feb 1800.
The land in question was located in Military tract 15, section 5,
quarter section 2. Studying the map in the book, it seems that the land
is located Northeast of Columbus, Ohio near a little town called
Centerburg. The final surprise came when I looked again at the list of
warrants used to claim that quarter-section. There was the name of Pvt.
John Thompson who had received Warrant #7071 for 100 acres on 1 Oct 1791. I'm not sure who this could be. The John Thompson's I have
listed were not born until after the Revolutionary war, or were too old
to have faught in it.

Notes for LIMELLAH WEIDMAN:
OBITUARY -- MRS. ENOCH THOMPSON...
possible from the Shenandoah Sentinal Post June 13 1917

Limellah Weidman was born at Columbia, New Jersey, Nov. 4, 1831. the age of sixteen she moved with her parents to Abbington, Pa.

It was here that she met Enoch Thompson to whom She was married Aug. 17,
1850.

Soon after their marriage they moved to eastern Iowa near Davenport. They lived at that place about four years.

In 1854 they moved to the farm north of Shenandoah which she still owned when she died June 13, 1917. To this union was born ~ix children:

Andrew Thompson of Falfurrias, Texas; Addie Wilson of Sidney; Emma
Thompson who died at the age of 27; Flora Yates whose home is near
Shenandoah; James Tbompson of Wood Lake, Neb; Mamie Thompson who
died in infancy.

In 1863 Mrs. Thompson with her husband was converted at a camp meeting in Stafford's grove. They united with the M. E. Church
soon after and ever since that time she has been a diligent reader of the bible and one who was constant in prayer.

Each evening she read her chanter and prayed aloud before closing her eyes in slumber.

She always threw her influence on the right side of every great question. It was ever her boast and her pride that she had
reared two sons to manhood who used neither intoxicating liquors nor tobacco.

Her lot was full of the drudgery and privations that fall to the lot of the pioneer. But regardless of all the hardships
and sorrows that came to her, she maintained a jolly fun-loving disposition.

No sacrifice was too great for her if by it she could promote the welfare or the happiness of her children.

During her last illness, her two daughters and the younger son enjoyed the privilege of being constantly at her
bed side and ministering to her wants, while the older son aided with frequent messages of love and prayer to his dying mother.

A good woman has gone from us. One of whom it can be truly said, "she hath done what she could."

Notes for JESSE GARDNER THOMPSON:
A Pioneer
Sudden Demise of One of the
Cities Earliest Residents

Ex-Alderman Jesse G Thompson
Falls Asleep peacefully..His Long Active
and useful career

Thursday afternoon paper Carbondale Pa 1896

It was a sever and totally unexpected shock to the city when the people were informed during the early hours of the morning that ex-alderman
Jesse G Thompson had passed away at his home on Sixth Avenue during the night, and many could not credit the report. As late as yesterday
afternoon, Mr. Thompson had been seen out of doors and he appeared in his usual health which seemed robust for a man of his years.

Few persons. were aware, however; that he had recently suffered several attacks of heart failure which foreboded the end, but he
seemed to feel that death was not far off, though he said little about it. Last he was seized with what proved to be his last attack.
He begun to fail perceptibly in the evening and about midnight it was seen that the worst must be prepared for.

Mr. Thompson's mind was clear and his heart cheerful. He asked for his old and beloved friend, Bryce R. Blair and the latter as well as
Drs. Gillis and Wheeler were sent for. The doctors at once pronounced all hope past, and these gentlemen with the dying man's daughter. Mrs. Chase.
waited for the end. When the transition of the spirit did come it came beautifully. Mr. Thompson took the hand of nr. Blair bade him good bye
and turning to the others he repeated several times:

"God bless you all.' It's all right." These were his last words except to ask for a handkerchief. Soon after he turned to his daughter and made an
effort to speak to her. but his lips moved without a sound and he fell into his long sleep as sweetly as a child loses consciousness under the soothing caresses of its mother.

For fifty-six years Jesse G. Thompson was a resident of this city, and during that long period he was continually with the people. He was identified
with the growth of the town, with its business interests and with everything that had a tendency to make this a community of homes. His first wife to
this locality antedated the completion of the first railroad; when the site of our pretentious city was but primitive forest. Four years later is the
year 1831 .He entered the service of the Delaware and Hudson Canal company, as carpenter and bridge builder, and was known as an expert in that line of work.
In the year 1834 he secured a contract in New York State to construct a number of canal locks; work that occupied all his time for more then two years. In
1836 he returned to his home in Pittston township and taught the public school one term. In the spring of 1837 he brought his wife to this place;
here his children were born and grown to manhood and women hood; here his eventful life was spent, with its full measure of joy and sorrow until
at a ripe old age he was called to join the beloved wife, daughter and only son who had passed on before him.

His end was peacefu1; it was such an ending of life as he hoped for; such as he had often expressed a wish for. Death had no terrors. for him,
and he parlayed not with the grim messenger. The midnight bell had struck and the new day was scarce ushered in when, with a benediction Upon those
about his bedside and without a perceptible struggle he poised into that sleep that knows no waking. Such was the peaceful ending of one who for
fourscore and three years had shared the varying fortunes that come to men actively en-gage in the duties of life. His had been a life of unusual activity;
his youth spent upon the farm, he began very early in life to perform his share of the work on and about the home place. He attended the township school;
was an apt pupil and quickly grasped what the instructor had to impart, and ex-celled in mathematics. He acquired the use tools and knowledge of building
without the formal apprenticeship to trade and When quite a young man had a well earned reputation as a house builder. In the early thirties he construct-ed
and completed a grist mill at Leggett's Creek. and one of the conditions of the contract provided that the mill should be operated for a short time before
the work was accepted. This was his first undertaking at mill construction. but the that was successful, the owner accepted the work and for many years this
was the principal and considered the best equiped mill in the valley.

Soon after taking up his residence here he engaged in trade and in his mercantile ventures he was associated with these persons: Jesse Gardner, J
edial Bowen, and Jams Stott. He retired from mercantile pursuits prior to 1860. During the war he was connected with the United States assessor's office
and among other duties prepared the military enrolment for this section. in the year 1872 he was elected alderman for the Second ward. but owing to some
tech-nicality the election was made void and one year later he was again chosen by the people to the office, in which he served four terms; twenty years
as the local magistrate and justice of the peace in the central ward of the city.

For this work he developed special fitness, for he was a man of rare attain-ments. His long career in general business had taught him how to deal
with man and conditions. He had some knowledge of common law, but he possessed what is better, a knowledge of human nature, he was a man of good Judgment,
and in his breast beat a heart large and kind, controlling him in all his official acts and leading him always to temper justice with true charity.
He was the friend of the unfortunate, always ready to help the weak, quick to point out a way of reform the erring and prompt to aid those whose condition demanded immediate help.

He was everybody's friend. Hundreds of people went to him, with their troubles and they can testify today, that he never turned a deaf ear to their
tale of sor-row, nor allowed any to leave without doing something to relieve the weight of their burden. He aimed to do all the good that he could.
and in his unostentatious way he accomplished far more than he would believe.

He made a record that will live after him in the hearts of those whom he as-sisted in various ways; he was one who builded better then he knew.
He will be remembered by all the people of this city, for he was known to everybody. He was a kind, genial, companionable man, and his close friends
who injoyed his talks of the early day, his reminiscences of the pioneer period, will not forget him. He was one of the few. He is no more.,
but those who knew him will always revere his memory.

Mr. Thompson is survived by four daughters. nanely. Mrs. J M Alexan-der and Mrs. Anna Chase, of this city; Mrs. Mary Plopper, of Elgin, Ill,
and Mrs. E. Y. Davis, of Bayonne, N. J. Two brothers and one sister are living; James Thompson, , of North Church street this. city; Enoch Thompson, of Iowa,
and Mrs. Rebecca Waite, of Waverly township, this county. Long life is a rule in this family, an uncle of the deceased in Illinois being still living at the age of 103.

The Funeral announcement will be made tomorrow.
