HANS KIERSTEDE
The following appeared in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Volume I XV, Number 3, July 1934.

THE KIERSTEDE FAMILY.

The progenitor of this prominent New York family was Dr. Hans Kierstede of Magdeburg, Germany. He was born in Magdeburg,the capital of Prussian Saxony, about 1612, for he gave his age as about 32 years in 1644. J. H. Innes suggests that there is reason to suspect that he and his brother Jochem "were refugees afier the dreadful sack of Magdeburg by Count Tilly's savage troops in the year 1631, at which time Hans Kierstede was about nineteen years of age"

It has been repeatedly stated that Dr. Hans Kierstede arrived in New Amsterdam in March, 1638, with Governor Kieft, but the compiler has not been able to confirm this. It is certain, however, that he was here in May, 1638, as a surgeon in the employ of the West India Company, and that he continued with the Company for five years or more.
It seems probable that he was accompanied to this country by his brother Jochem Kierstede, who appears first in the early records on Jan. 9, 1642, and is mentioned several times during the next few years. On Oct. 27, 1644 he bought one half of "the vessel called The Hope", and he seems to have taken passengers, for on Oct. 11, 1645 he was sued by Thomas WiIlett and Jeuriaen Blanck for damages suffured on a voyage to Rhode lsland. On April 12, 1647 he received a patent for a lot on Manhattan Island, on the shore of the East River, but did not live long to enjoy it, as he was drowned in the wreck of "The Princess" on Sept. 27, 1647, when Governor Kieft and Domine Bogardus and 78 others perished. Apparently , Jochem Kierstede was not married, and left no heirs beside his brother. Eleven years late r D. Hans Kierstede asked if this property belonged to him as his brother's heir, or had reverted to the Company
In 1642 Dr. Kierstede was married. The banns were published June 29, 1642: Mr. Hans Kierstede, Chirurgyn,j.m. Van Maegdeburg, en Sarah Roelofs,j.d. Van Amsterdam, beyde wonende tot N. Amsterdam ["both living at New Amsterdam"]. Sara Roelofs was adaughter of Roeloff Jansen and famous wife Anneke Jans. Anneke Jans married as her second husband Domine Everardus Bogardus, so Sara was the Domine's stepdaughter.
It was at the wedding of Hans Kierstede and Sara Roeloffse that Kieft passed his subscription list for the erection o f a church, which was thus described by a contemporary:- "The Director then resolved to build a church ..... but he was in want of money and was at a loss how to obtain it. It happened about this time that the minister, Everardus Bogardus, gave his stepdaughter in marriage; and the occasion of the wedding the Director considered a good opportunity for his purpose. So after the fourth or fifth round of drinking, he set about the business, and he himself showing a liberal example let the wedding-guests subscribe what they were willing to give towards the church. All there with light heads subscribed largely, competing with one another; and although some well repented it when they recovered their senses, they were nevertheless compelled to pay-nothing could avail to prevent it".
Two years later, on March 15, 1744, Philip Gerritsen, keeper of the City Tavern, asked Domine Bogardus, Dr. Kierstede, Gysbert Opdyck and others, with their wives, to a party at the Tavern. Everything was going along merrily until Capt. John Underhill and some cronies appeared. One thing led to another until-upon the refusal of Opdyck to join the others-Capt. Underhill "and his companions with drawn swords knocked to pieces all but three of the mugs that hung from the shelf in the corner." Finally Underhill broke into the room where the guests were, "having his sword in his right and the scabbard in the left, the b lade about a foot out of the scabbard. Holding his sword as described, said Jan Underhill to the minister: 'Clear out of here, or I shall strike at random.' The guests did "clear out"-"we broke up our pleasant party before we had intended".
Dr. Kierstede must have left the service of the West India Company about 1644 or 1645, for on Aug. 28, 1645, he is spoken of as "late in the company's service". He then entered private practice, in which he continued until his death. But there is evidence that he tried to get back in to the Company's service, for on April 15, 1650, Jehan Raye and two other directors of the West India Company wrote a letter to Stuyvesant in which they said:-
"A surgeon, Mr. Hans Kierstede, troubles us here a good deal: he tells us that one Jacob Molenaer, who now serves the Company there as surgeon, is inclined to leave our service and as he Kierstede, has also served under the Company a long time and as far as we know faithfully, we are willing that you should listen to his requests, if matters are, as he says and if in your opinion his services are required by the Company, he may take the place of surgeon". It is not known when he sailed back to the Netherlands, but he must have returned to New Netherland soon after the date of this letter, as his third child was baptized at New Amsterdam on April 23, 1651.
On Jan. 21, 1647, Kierstede had received a patent on a piece of property on Manhattan Island, "adjoining the company's store on the strand." Here he erected a house, a view of which has been preserved, and which remained the property of his descendants for over fifty years. On Sept. 5, 1664 Dr. Kierstede was one of the signers of the "Remonstrance"to the Director General, advising that New Netherland be surrendered to the English, and in October he took the Oath of Allegiance to the English. He joined the Dutch Ref. Ch.-of which his wife had long been a member-on Jan. 11, 1665.
He lived but a short time longer, dying in 1666. The exact date of his death is not known, but van Ruyven in a letter dated from "Manhatans, 7/17 August 1666," to Stuyvesant, said: "Since you left there have died here, to my knowledge, Abraham KIock, Hans Kierstede".
Dr. Kierstede seems to have won and held an outstanding place in the Community. Mrs. Van Rensselaer ("History of the City of New York," 1:190) says that "Kierstede's descendants followed in his steps with a constancy rare in our changeful America: it is believed that always since his time New York has had a physician or an apothecary of his blood and name."
But let the final estimate of Dr. Kierstede come from Gov. Stuyvesant himself. During the Esopus campaign Capt. Creiger had evidently asked that surgeon Kierstede be sent to him. Stuyvesant and the Council replied, in a letter of Aug. 27, 1663: "We understand the necessity of a good surgeon perfectly well, but you know as well as we, how difficult it is to obtain one; Master Hans is a burgher and besides cannot be spared here without detriment to the whole place and all the inhabitants. You and we know, what the other two are. We see for the present no better expedient, than that the sick and wounded, whom the sawbones there can neither help nor cure, be sent down by every chance".
Of his wife, Sara Roeloffse, nothing can be added to the account of her life which has already appeared. Suffice it here to say that she married second, banns Sept. 1, 1669, Cornelius van Borsum; and married third,banns, July21, 1683 Elbert Elbertsen Stoothoff. She died in New York in 1693, her will being dated, July 29, 1693, with a codicil dated Aug. 7, 1693, and both were proved Oct. 21, 1693.

1. ??1 KEIRSTEAD. He married ??? KEIRSTEAD.

Notes William the Silent was born April 24, 1533 at the Castle of Dillenburg, in Germany.
His mother was Juliana von Stolberg (b c1507, d c1580). His father, William the Rich,
Count of Nassau- Dillenburg, (b c1487, d Oct 1559) recorded the birth: "On Thursday,
April 24th, 1533, the highborn Juliana von Stolberg, Countess and lady of Nassau, between two
and three in the morning - but nearer to three - in the castle of Dillenburg, gave birth to an infant
of the male sex; he shall be called William." William was their first child, although each had been
married previously. More importantly, he was the first male child, and thus heir to his fathers' title.
However, William the Silent was the cousin of Rene of Chalon, who held the princeship of Orange
at that time. He wrote his will shortly before going into battle (where he subsequently died), leaving
this title to his young cousin. So in 1544, at Rene's death, William the Silent inherited the principality
of Orange, and, at his father's urging, renounced his birth inheritance. William the Silent married
his first wife, Anne of Egmont (b c1533, d March 24, 1558) on July 6, 1551 (possibly July 8, 1551).
She was the daughter of Maximillian Count of Buren. William and Anne had two children: Philip William
(b 1554, d 1618; Prince of Orange 1584-1618) and Marie (b 1556, d 1616). After Anne's death, William
appears to have kept a mistress briefly. Her name was Eve Elincx, and by her, he had a son named Justin
of Nassau (b c1563). He acknowledged Justin as his son, and kept him at the Castle of Dillenburg
regularly. William's second wife was Anne of Saxony (b April 23, 1544, d December 18, 1577). She
was the daughter of Maurice, duke and elector of Saxony. The married June 2, 1561, and had 3 children:
Anna (b 1563, d 1588), Maurice (b November 14, 1567, d April 23, 1625; Prince of Orange 1618-1625),
and Emelia (b 1569, d 1629), Shortly before 1571, Anne ran away with a married man, and when
discovered, was quite obviously pregnant with this man's child. Therefore, William had her repudiated,
but kept it fairly silent until he was ready to marry again. William's third wife was Charlotte de Bourbon
(b 1547, d May 5, 1582). She was the daughter of Louis, duke of Montpensier. They married on J
une 12, 1575, William's divorce of Anne being completed. William and Charlotte had 6 daughers:
Louisa Juliana (b 1576, d 1644), Elizabeth (b 1577 d 1642), Catherine Belgia (b 1578, d 1648),
Charlotte Flandrina (b 1579, d 1640), Charlotte Brabantina (b 1580, d 1631), Emilia Antwerpina
(b 1581 at Antwerp, d 1657). William's fourth wife was Louise de Coligny (b September 28, 1555,
d October 1620). She was the daughter of Gaspard de Coligny, Admiral of France. They were married
April 12, 1583. William and Louise had only one son: Frederick Henry (b January 29, 1584, d 1647;
Prince of Orange 1625-1647). Of William's 12 legitimate children, only six went on to marry and bear
children. All of these were the children of his 3rd and 4th marriage. Louisa Juliana married Frederick IV,
Elector Palatine, in 1593. They had at least 2 children: Frederick V and Elizabeth Charlotte. Frederick V
later married Elizabeth, daughter of James I of England, and they were the king and queen of Bohemia.
Elizabeth Charlotte later was the mother of Frederick William of Brandenburg. Elizabeth married Henri,
Duc of Bouillon, Price of Sedan (her first cousin on her mother's side), in 1595. They had 3 children:
Frederic Maurice, Duc de Bouillon; Marshal Turenne; and Marie de la Tour. Catherine Belgia married
Philip Lewis II, Count of Hanau- Munzenberg, in 1596. They had 2 sons: Philip Maurice and Philip Louis III.
Charlotte Brabantina married Claude de la Tremoille, Duc de Trouars. They had 2 children: Henri, Duc de la
Tremoille, Duc de Trouars; and Charlotte de la Tremoille. Emilia Antwerpina married Frederick Casimir,
Count Palatine of Zweibrucken. They had a son: Frederick Lewis. Frederick Henry married Emilia of
Solms-Braunsfeld, in 1625. They had 9 children, only 5 of which left further descendants: William II,
Prince of Orange and Stadholder of Holland (b 1626, d 1650, married to Mary, daughter of Charles I,
King of England); Louisa Henrietta (b 1627, d 1662, married 1646 to Frederick William of Brandenburg,
grandson of her half-aunt, Louisa Juliana; Albertina Agnes (b 1634, d 1697, married William Frederick of
Nassau-Dietz, grandson of John of Nassau-Dillenburg (the brother of William the Silent); Henriette
Catherine (b 1637 d 1708, married John George II, Prince of Anholt-Dessau); and Marie (b 1642, d 1688,
married Lewis Henry Maurice, Duke of Zimmem).

2. HANS2 KEIRSTEAD, DR (??1) was born 1612 in Madgeburg, Prussian Saxony, and died August 17, 1666 in New York, New York. He married SARAH ROELOFFSE June 29, 1642 in Long Island, New York, USA, daughter of Roeloff Jans.

The surname means: Cherry Town (Source: Receptionist at the American Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus, 1964). Further, there are cherry orchards around Magdeburg, Germany.

Family background:
The K's originally lived in or near Magdeburg, Saxony, Prussia (now Germany). In 1631 Count Tilly plundered Magdeburg, and two brothers Hans and Jochem left for the Netherlands. Hans arrived in New Amsterdam in the Spring of 1638 having left the Netherlands in the Fall of 1637 (not sure why it took so long to cross the Atlantic Ocean) in the employ of the Dutch West Indies Trading Company as a Surgeon. Jochem's arrival date is unknown. Jochem's data is sketchy, however, it is written that Jochem perished in the wreck of the vessel "Princess" in a storm off the coast of Wales on September 27, 1647, the vessel was returning to the Netherlands. It was written that Jochem may have been the vessel's Captain, other writings said he was a passenger.

The family is related to the House of Nassau through the marriage of Hans Kierstede to Sara Roeloff daughter of Roeloff Jansen and Anneke Jans Webber. In the early 1900's some family members tried to bring a lawsuit to recover about 60 acres of property on Lower Manhattan Island in the area now known as "Wall Street". However, the courts declined to act.

The surname was probably spelled "Kierstede" for a generation or two after Hans Kierstede, then for some reason, possibly to modernize it the surname became "Kierstead". In 1783 when a family of Kiersteads, who were Loyalist to the British Crown, moved from Long Island, NY to the area in and around Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada it became "Keirstead". Several if not all the six sons took on the surname "Keirstead", so as to distinguish themselves from the 'non-loyalist' Kiersteads. A recently received (1996) letter indicates that a grandma school teacher changed the spelling back to "Kierstead" on each of her students because there's an old grammar saying "I before E, except after C". That's not the only reason for all the variations in our surname. Other plausible reasons seen: Genealogy researchers could not decipher the old style hand written notes, letters and reports. Census takers spelled the name the way they thought, without checking. Lastly, typists were just careless in their jobs and didn't proofread their documents.

Another cousin wrote (1996) that Kierstead versus Keirstead donoted Catholics versus Protestants. After questioning several Kiersteads that theory didn't pan out. Yes, there are Catholic Kiersteads. The religious affiliations normally seen are: Baptist, Dutch Reformed, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Methodist, Mormon and Presbyterian.

The early K's were professional people; numerous Doctors and Clergy in the 1600 through the latter 1700's. Then we see a trend towards Farmers and Clergy, and in the 1900's no specific occupation stands out. K's have fought and died in all the wars. It does appear that today most K's live above the poverty level and quite a few are educators in institutions of higher learning.

In New Brunswick, Canada there is a Kierstead Mountain and a Kiersteadville. (Although, previously known prior to 1996, I finally got to see a map with both places listed. Source: Donald Neil Keirstead).
